History of the Nurrenyen Herd

Nurrenyen Alpaca Stud - Your key to Ultrafine Alpaca Wool

The Nurrenyen herd has been created through the sourcing of high quality solid white huacaya breeding females from two established breeders who are adherents to the SRS® breeding system.

Our first hembras (16) were purchased in 2008 from Northfield Gully Alpacas together with the SRS® recommended sire Northfield Gully Accolade.

Eight of these hembras were pregnant to Northfield Gully Accolade, and have produced quality cria for us in autumn 2009, while the remaining eight were mated to what we considered the best available genetics in Victoria. These sires were selected in consultation with our first breeding advisor, John Pike, during a tour of leading Victorian studs. The sires are all SRS® recommended males, Camelot Tor, Jolimont Giovanni, Windsong Valley Iceman, and Shandbrooke Accoyo Invincible. The cria are due in autumn 2010.

The hembras from Northfield Gully included Bohemia, a daughter of Accolade. She epitomises the style of alpaca that we are aiming to breed. Bohemia exhibits the characteristics of a commercial breeding female; an early maturing fertile female with a very dense fleece growing 120 mm per annum. The combination of density, which accompanies fineness, and length, leads to commercially valuable fleeces required for the commercial alpaca fleece industry of the future.

We are always looking for hembras that will complement our present herd and help us achieve our breeding objectives. To this end we recently added to our base herd a selection of quality breeding females from Yuralee Alpacas at Candelo, NSW. These hembras produce very fine and long fleeces and will be complemented by being mated to Accolade who has density, length and uniformly fine primary and secondary fibres.

Nurrenyen Breeding Objectives:

We have defined our breeding plan and its objectives to breed Huacaya with the following characteristics:

SRS® Style Fibre, Ultra Soft, Deep & Bold Crimp, Lustrous with Fibre Bundles

High fibre growth rate and animals to maintain staple length into age

Five kilogram fleeces from mature animals

Correct conformation and strong constitution

High growth rate, early maturity and high fertility

We utilise all available breeding technologies and the best available genetics and management techniques to deliver leading edge animals.

Nurrenyen choose to use the SRS® Breeding System as we believe its sound scientific base and fibre breeding performance in the Merino and Angora goat industries will deliver the qualities we desire in our alpaca development in Australia.

The AGE (Across-herd Genetic Evaluation) objective measurement analysis is used to compare the commercially important traits of our animals within the Australian Alpaca Herd.
